Dogs that reduce the risk of allergies towards humans are called hypoallergenic dogs. They possess this quality because of their short human like hair; they don’t shed, or throw allergens into the air. Special considerations must be made in order to provide proper grooming for these dogs. The first step when bringing a hypoallergenic dog into your home is to let them get acquainted with his surroundings. Avoid contact with other dogs in the house, at least until the newly arrived pet is comfortable getting around. Generally hypoallergenic type dogs are small in size, show much enthusiasm and are easily overwhelmed by changes. Be patient, do not assume you can jump in to playing dog games the first day of his arrival, it will take a least a few days to break him in.
As your new dog finds his way around your home, you should go ahead and make a plan for your dog. This plan should include a feeding and grooming schedule. Within the grooming schedule it is important to include brushing activity. If you are prone to allergic reactions, brushing this type of dog will reduce the risk of allergens being spread in the air a great deal. They do not shed, or leave dead hair all over the house. The hair will remain, and will only get longer. For this reason it important that you take good care of it by brushing it often. In the event that you have decided towards a Mexican Hairless, or a similar breed completely void of hair, then special attention should be given to their skin. Before any kind of flaking is apparent in the dog’s skin, you should consult your veterinarian for the proper lotion to use on your dog.
Hypoallergenic dogs are well known for their enthusiasm and high degree of energy. It is imperative that you provide some kind of activity, such as running outdoors, or playing dog games in order for them to let it all out. Taking your dog outdoors to do some exercise and comfortable sleep at night are a sure recipe for a healthy dog. Dogs who do not put in their quota of exercise are likely to have trouble sleeping and keep you up all night as well.
In order to help your dog get a good night sleep, locate a spot in the house just for him. Make it comfortable with a blanket, and perhaps a box or basket which confines his bed. Make sure his bed is clean, and washed every now and then or he will avoid sleeping in it. Even if allergens and pollens cannot be eliminated entirely, they can be kept at minimum levels by paying attention to hygiene around the home.
Some pet owners are tempted to dismiss grooming their hypoallergenic dog because they don’t look like they need it. However, these dogs need proper grooming for their coat in order to prevent knots from forming. The hair can also get too long, to the extent that it will cover the dog’s eyes.
Proper grooming of your hypoallergenic dog can greatly reduce the risk of allergy attacks from occurring. However, this does not mean the pet owner completely risk free. Some degree of risk is still present and possible depending on each individual case. Adequate grooming will only make it somewhat safer.
