Sonic Rivals can be played as a single player mode or multiplayer mode.

The game is the first to be featured in 2.5 D style. Sonic Rivals 2 which was developed specifically for PSP was released on 2007. The main characters in Sonic Rivals are Tails, Espio and Rouge.

Sonic Rivals is a racing game just like the previous Sonic games made in the Sega Genesis platform. However, there are many differences between them in the game play mechanics. Sonic Rivals has many elements from the 2D side scrollers and Sonic games that are made in 3D graphics. To move, use the analog stick or D pad/arrow. To jump, press the (X) button. To attack, press the (O) button. To activate Power Ups, press the (Triangle) button. To prepare before the homing attack press (X) twice times. To perform a spin dash, press the Down + (X) button.

The rings protect you from the badniks around. If you are hit by an enemy without rings, you will be reverted into the previous area. If you conquer a stage, the rings will give you a bonus score. The ring count is displayed on the top left corner of the screen. You lose 10 rings each time you get hit by an enemy. The Ranks is a performance meter that shows how good you perform in a stage. The lowest rank is C Rank and the highest rank is S Rank. The ranks are counted by the number of jostles, power ups, rings, and boosts that are used by you to complete a stag. The race time is shown on top of the screen. The distance meter indicates the distance between you and the rival. The rival arrow indicates the location of the rival if he is not appearing on the screen. The position is displayed on the bottom right corner of the screen. It shows your winning position in the race, for example, 1st or 2nd place. The boosts appear through the stages and can be identified with a X or O icon. If you press X on a boost, you will perform the Air Boost which is a vertical boost. The vertical boost helps you to get to higher places in the game. If you press O on a boost, you will perform a speed boost, which is a horizontal boost. The horizontal boost let you dash against the rival and defeat them. The jostle is performed by pressing the O or homing attack button.
