In today’s society, pet grooming is an established practice, and a way for some people to make a living. It is not uncommon for families to spend quite a deal of money in the grooming of their pets in the hands of a professional groomer. It is also an unspoken fact that even though we use these services extensively, few know anything about its history. If we take a look at the paintings on museums dating back to the middle ages, we will notice some of the pet grooming history being recorded through the well groomed dogs that are portrayed in them. They were either showed playing pet games, or in someone’s lap, but who was responsible for the grooming? Could there have been a pet groomer for the queen? Some rare paintings even show a pet in the lord’s lap being brushed, which goes to show they did the grooming themselves, although not exclusively.

As civilization entered the industrial age, late into the 1800’s, poodles where known to have gained status in the royal court. Records exist of dog parlors being present at this time in history. The book of the Dog was written by Shaw in 1879. This compilation of articles regarding dog grooming actually mentioned ways to properly groom your pet, provide proper care and keep your animal healthy.

For some time animals has left the barn as working creatures and entered the home to be family pets, and even society appearing in public gatherings and events. Usually, the animals where groomed by a professional, or by the owner, as not everyone could afford the services of a groomer. For a long time, horses where kept as a status symbol. The owner of these horses would hire stable boys to take care of them. Over time, horses had completely left the barn as working animals and became more of a status symbol in society, With this transformation, pet grooming became even more important.

In the most part of the last century, a well groomed animal has been the epitome of wealth and prosperity. The hygiene and health of house pets became a reflection of the owner. For this reason, a higher demand for grooming products and services became more apparent. The issue of appearance became so important, society began to develop specific standards for certain breeds. The way they looked, the length of the hair and nails, and other grooming aspects where governed mostly by the pet fashion industry.

Evidence of the importance of fashion in pets can be confirmed today by the thousands of websites available online dedicated to pet fashion and grooming techniques. Pet groomers who have made grooming their profession today; stand in the shoulders of many people before them who dedicated themselves to the perfection of the trade. This makes it possible for you to spend more time playing pet games with your dog, and later have him bathed and trimmed in no time by well trained individuals in no time at all.
