The Hallmark of a good game is often a great villain, if the game has a villain that is. Villains in games, stories and movies often make these that much better for us. A good villain can be good in many ways. First of all is his evil ways that are absolutely meant to be foiled since the time he was conceived. Then, it can be his mannerisms, how he deals with the hero(es) and how he plans to do the typical villain things, like take over the world .
So when it comes to Sonic The Hedgehog, the game s success can no doubt be attributed to the almost lovable character of Eggman as the villain. Sega has a long history of a fascination with eggs, just check their games catalogue. This fascination seems to have worked curing the creation of Sonic as well. Eggman AKA Dr. Ivo Robotnik is a portly character with a huge bushy moustache and spindly legs. After that description, it is obvious that he cannot be too threatening. However, he is quite clever and he keeps on coming up with egg inventions to defeat Sonic and reach his end goal.
Egg inventions here mean that somehow his inventions always end up having something to do with eggs. It is either used as a weapon or as the shape of the machine. In fact, almost everything around Eggman is egg shaped. His spaceship, called the egg carrier, is also egg shaped. Makes one wonder though, shouldn t his ship be called an eggcup?
Dr. Robotnik uses a lot of gadgets and hi tech machinery to do what he does. The obvious question that comes up here, is this where does he get all the money from to make all those machines? Does he have a huge junkyard full of spare parts? Does he have a supplier? But when you are cartoon character inside a game, you really do not need to answer those questions at all.
That is major fun about creating a character like Eggman. You can make him out to be absolutely evil, having an endless supply of machines and completely without any explanations whatsoever. However, Eggman s dubious plans never succeed and nor were they ever meant to. But he still manages to keep us entertained with his endless supply of evil plots.
After all, our favorite blue, supersonic hedgehog would not have had any luck whatsoever saving his planet had it not been for Eggman. He gets to be heroic because Eggman exists. So much as you may love Sonic, if you look deep inside yourself, you will realize that the character of Eggman greatly adds to the richness of the game. If it was some other silly villain and not someone as good as Eggman, you probably would not have enjoyed the game as much as you did. Thus, when people sit down to think about their favorite villains, Sonic fans are very likely to come up with Eggman rather than some other villain.
