What is Point of Sale Software?

Point of sale software (which will be referred to as POS software throughout the rest of this article) is technology that takes the place of a traditional cash register. Its primary function is to process sales and transactions through a computerized system. The business owner inputs the products they sell, the cost of the products and the quantity sold. Then the POS software calculates the total and tax, and displays how much change is due. It also keeps track of all previous sales and activity.

Another helpful aspect of POS software is its automation of tasks that previously required manual calculation. Since this software keeps track of all sales activity, it can perform functions such as calculate all sales and sales tax totals for the day, or decipher which products made the most profit.
What Features do Different Versions of POS Offer?

A business owner’s needs vary greatly depending on which type of business they operate. There are many diverse services offered by all the different versions of POS software, a business owner should investigate all of these features to determine which amenities their business needs. Then they will know which offerings to look for when purchasing POS software.

Accounting Reports
In the days of old-fashioned cash registers, balancing the books for a company required accountants to sort through countless receipts and perform all of the mathematics manually.

Thankfully, this is no longer necessary. POS software produces built-in financial reports for accounting purposes; bookkeepers can also create customized reports depending on business needs.

Inventory Management
As stated earlier, POS software keeps a running total of all sales, including which products sell the most, and which inventory items are running low. This enables the business owner to keep track of which products they need to order and when they need to order them.

Past Transactions
POS software also keeps track of all prior transactions; therefore, it is simple to look up transactions processed during a previous week or month.

Purchase Orders
Not only can business owners utilize POS software to create purchase orders, they can actually automate the entire ordering process through this software.

Speed
POS software processes transactions much faster than a traditional cash register, from credit card authorization to receipt printing, which keeps customers and workers satisfied.

Low Errors
POS software has built-in checks to ensure accuracy and prevent, or at least lessen, mistakes.

Low Maintenance Cost
Due to the fact that traditional cash registers are becoming rarer, there are far less cash register repair professionals than in the past as well. When there are few professionals trained to perform a certain service, the price for that service always increases. POS software is in almost every store and retail establishment currently. This means there are many trained POS software repair professionals available, keeping the repair cost quite low.

As is apparent, there are many valuable services offered by POS software. It can benefit any type of business, especially if the business owner researches exactly which POS software to purchase.
